What is Anxiety?

Anxiety can appear in many different forms. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders also known as (DSM-5) Anxiety can come in 11 different diagnoses.

So what is anxiety? “Anxiety is the anticipation of future threat(s)”. “Fear is the emotional response to a real or perceived imminent threat.” (American Psychiatric Association. pg. 189.2013). “People with anxiety disorders usually have recurring intrusive thoughts or concerns, They may avoid certain situations out of worry. They may also have physical symptoms such as sweating, trembling, dizziness, or a rapid heartbeat.” (American Psychological Association, 2022).

What can be some of the symptoms?

  • Feeling Nervous

  • Not being able to stop control or worrying

  • Worrying too much about different things

  • Trouble relaxing

  • Being so restless that it is hard to sit still

  • Becoming easily annoyed or irritable.

What can I do about it?

First, if you feel it isn’t hindering your life too much find coping skills. What is your go to coping skill? Breathing? Journaling? Coloring? Shower? Here are some things to help if you are struggling to find a coping skill.

Breathing exercises, noticing what is going on in your body, and where is it sitting. Breathing into those spots.

Journaling, writing down what your worst thoughts are, and playing out that scenario.

Coloring, may seem silly but coloring can help focus onto something else than the situation you are in.

Music. Music can help a lot and let you calm down.
