What is Panic Disorder?

Definition

According to the DSM-5 “Panic Disorder is: " An abrupt surge of intense fear or intense discomfort that reaches a peak within minutes, and during which time four or more of the following symptoms occur

1) Palpitation, pounding heart, or accelerated heart rate.

2. Sweating

3. Trembling or shaking.

4. Sensations of shortness of breath or smothering.

5. Feelings of choking

6. Chest pain or discomfort

7. Nausea or abdominal distress

8. Feeling dizzy, unsteady, light-headed, or faint.

9. Chills or heat sensations.

10. Paresthesias (numbness or tingling sensations.

11. Derealization (feelings of unhealthy) or depersonalization.

12. Fear of losing control

Facts about Panic Disorder

According to the NIMH (National Institute of Mental Health) 

    • An estimated 2.7% of U.S. adults had panic disorder in the past year.

    • Past year prevalence of panic disorder among adults was higher for females (3.8%) than for males (1.6%).

  • An estimated 4.7% of U.S. adults experience panic disorder at some time in their lives. (Panic disorder 2003)

What to do if you have a Panic Attack

Use Grounding Techniques

Focus on your breathing and do the following:

1) Count to four while inhaling through your nose

2) Count to four and hold your breath

3) Exhale slowly from your mouth and count to 6.

Keep repeating until you notice your body relaxing.
